Graduate Program
The study of politics is a classical science, the origins of which can be traced into antiquity. At The Catholic University of America, this classical science is among the most popular of the university’s many graduate programs. The department’s proximity to the national and international policymaking in Washington accounts for some of this popularity. However, the program itself is also unique in its combined emphasis on books and ideas in the context of thorough analysis of politics in the contemporary world.
Several programs are offered for graduate study. The master’s degree is offered for concentrations in American government, political theory and world politics. Special master’s programs are offered on Capitol Hill in the field of Congressional and Presidential Studies and in International Affairs. A joint program with the Department of Economics offers a master’s degree in international political economy. Qualified students may also pursue a combined MA/JD in conjunction with the Columbus School of Law. An extremely competitive Ph.D. program is offered in American politics, political theory, and world politics.
The department’s graduate programs feature small class sizes, close working relationships with the faculty, and Catholic University’s delightful educational environment. Program descriptions, faculty biographies, course information, political science resources, and department news items are included on the Department of Politics website.
